St Francis of Assis Chursh – Design Competition

View of the entry

Philp Lighton Architects design proposal responds to the brief and the site context.

The response is based on our understanding of the site and the purpose of the church.

The design acknowledges the adjacentness of the school, the CEO, the carpark access road and the requirement to place the Church on an east / west axis.

The church has been designed to look attractive from all angles and also to be overlooked from above the West Tamar Highway.

Specifically the design incorporates a Franciscan landscape theme with permanence, verticality and iconography, the three Catholic Church design principles.

The interior of the Church is designed to inspire awe, wonderment, a tribute to Gothic architecture (flying buttresses) and Tasmanians natural resources – timber and local craftsmanship.
