CONTRACTOR: Fairbrother
CONSTRUCTION TIME: 12 Months
Located at 79 Allunga Road, Chigwell, this medium-density social and affordable housing development comprises 22 apartments across four three-storey residential buildings. Originally engaged by Fairbrother as part of a design and construct contract for Centacare Evolve (now known as Loreto Community Housing) after the project had stalled at Development Application stage. PhilpLighton Architects redesigned the original concept to deliver a contemporary and accessible housing solution that responds to the growing need for quality affordable housing.
PhilpLighton Architects delivered planning amendments, construction documentation, building approvals and superintendent services throughout construction. The development provides three one-bedroom and nineteen two-bedroom apartments, all designed to meet the Silver Standard of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, ensuring comfort and safety for residents of all ages and abilities.
The four buildings are arranged around a central courtyard above basement parking, creating a well-connected and naturally lit residential environment. A durable palette of in-situ concrete, rendered blockwork, Primeline weatherboards and Trimdek metal cladding reduces the perceived scale of the development while complementing the surrounding neighbourhood. Thoughtfully landscaped communal and private open spaces foster a sense of ownership and community, delivering a robust, low-maintenance housing outcome in a location close to essential services.
