Scotch Oakburn College – Lachie Wright Centre & Precinct

CLIENT: Scotch Oakburn College
LOCATION: Newstead, Tasmania
STATUS: Completed
CONTRACTOR: Fairbrother

The Lachie Wright Centre & Precinct is a contemporary education facility at Scotch Oakburn College’s Elphin Campus, Newstead. Delivered as part of the College’s campus masterplan, the project creates a dedicated Year 5 learning environment with specialist Art and S.T.E.M. facilities connected by a vibrant outdoor learning precinct.

The redevelopment provides flexible learning spaces, collaborative teaching areas, specialist classrooms, multipurpose outdoor spaces and upgrades to the swimming pool precinct. Designed for students, teachers and the wider school community, the precinct supports adaptable learning and campus-wide connection.

The architectural response is shaped by the heritage-listed Claremont Garden and an established English Elm, which provides seasonal passive heating and shading. Sustainable design features include rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic systems and a Building Management System that enables real-time environmental learning. A robust palette of precast concrete and brick is balanced with lightweight timber cladding, strengthening the connection between architecture, landscape and contemporary education while creating a sustainable learning environment for future generations.
