The Bisdee Tier Astronomy Observatory is located at Spring Hill in central Tasmania. The facility replaces the Mt Canopus observatory which has been in operation for over thirty years. Light pollution from urban sprawl and aging equipment were major drivers for a new site and telescope for the University of Tasmania. The Astronomy Observatory was a complex project, not specifically due to its remote location, rather its environmentally sensitive context which required flora and fauna studies. The security of the site was also a concern, site access required modifications to the Midlands Highway, new road construction and a halt to building processes to allow for lambing.
